How we check origin
Every badge on PlazaMarket quotes the brand's own claim, from its website or packaging. We link the source and show the date we checked it. If a brand hasn't made a claim we can link to, it gets no badge.
What the labels mean
These are the Competition Bureau's guidelines for the claims brands make. The Bureau doesn't certify products, and neither do we.
- Product of Canada: the last substantial transformation happened in Canada, and at least 98% of the total direct costs are Canadian.
- Made in Canada: the last substantial transformation happened in Canada, and at least 51% of the total direct costs are Canadian. The claim should carry a qualifier such as "Made in Canada with imported parts".
- Canadian-owned: this is about who owns the company, not where the product is made. We show it as a separate badge.
We never upgrade a claim. For example, a Canadian-owned brand is never shown as Made in Canada. Source: Competition Bureau, Product of Canada and Made in Canada claims.
